Socotra Dragon Trees (Dracaena cinnabari), Diksam Plateau
Socotra is home to more than 900 species of plants, some 305 of which are endemic to the island, and it is believed that there are many more plant species yet to be discovered. One of the most famous Botanical curiosities of Socotra is the Dragon tree. The tree is so named because of the red resin that is excreted from any produced to the bark, reminiscent to the people from older ages to the blood of a dragon. This so-called Dragon’s blood was highly prized in the ancient world and is still used today. Around the Mediterranean basin it was used as a dye and as a medicine.
